Kirklands at a glance:
Kirklands is a comfortable old Georgian house built around 1829 with convict and local
labour by the Church of Scotland. The house was built as a manse and school for the
Scottish settlers in the Macquarie River district of central Tasmania. It is a
large, friendly house and over the years 400 people or more have passed through its now
174 year-old doors. From 1829 to 1988 all residents were involved in the ministry of
the Presbyterian and Apostolic Church.
Situated on 100 acres of prime rural Tasmanian land, nestled amongst ancient chestnuts,
a rare cedar of Lebanon and poplars it overlooks the Macquarie River and boasts a rich
colonial history - both intriguing and inspirational.
Centrally located between Launceston (45 minutes) and Hobart (1.5 hours), it provides a
secluded peaceful retreat; old world accommodation with a modern fully-equipped
kitchen. It is only 10 kilometers from Campbell Town and only one hour from
Tasmania's beautiful East Coast. Kirklands has six bedrooms suitable for large
families or groups up to twelve people (perfect for two families wanting to share both
company and costs). It hosts a large dining and lounge area, library, kid's
playroom, two bathrooms. Kirklands Manse has been re-decorated in a bright, slightly
Mediterranean style thus creating a casual and relaxed child-friendly atmosphere.
The house is fully equipped - all you need to bring is your own food. To cater for
the chilly Tassie winters we have recently installed heat pumps upstairs and downstairs
(cool in summer, warm in winter). The house also has cosy wood fires and wood
supplied.
It is so quiet at night (apart from the wildlife) that you can hear the sap running
through the trees!!
